Archetypes offer a universally understood symbol or pattern of behaviour used in myths and storytelling across different cultures. Carl Jung wrote extensively about how we can use archetypes to illuminate personality and literature. There are many variations on archetypes but we present here the twelve archetypes defined by Jung.
Most stories won’t contain all the archetypes, but you could use this plan to describe which character in your story most closely represents each archetype. Some characters may be a mix of the archetypes.
