Story structure gives your novel a page-turner quality, it creates momentum to keep your reader’s interest. Novel structure is often based around a character’s journey so these points follow on from Step 3 which considered your character’s psychology and motivation.

Where is your character at the start of your story, and what fix are they in?

What happens to disrupt their life, that leads them to make a decision or start a new adventure?

How do they resist this change at first?

What is their goal or motivation?

What is the first action they take towards this story goal?

How are they different when they embark on this new adventure?

Who are the allies or friends that help them on their way?

Which flaws do they possess which make their situation worse?

How might you show a first glimpse of a more heroic, unflawed, self?

How does your character take action in a way that will help them discover a new side to themselves?

What new threat does your character overcome, showing determination to reach their goal?

What situation occurs that suggests all is lost for your character, or that their goal is impossible?

How does your character cope with this difficult situation, how do they find a new way to continue?

What does your hero do in the final struggle to achieve the story goal?

How is your central character's story resolved?

How is your character changed by this story? Is their flaw now fixed? Describe how they are a better version of themselves.
